I believe the most common form of 5.1 surround are Divx movies with an AC-3 soundtrack. pdubyu, just to be clear, AC-3 and DD (Dolby Digital) are the same thing. My hope lies in a fully functional AC3 plugin in conjunction with a Mac compatible, consumer, 6 channel, external sound card. From a practical standpoint, it would solve our problem but I don’t see this ever happening (processor intensive, would degrade AAC sound, etc.). If Apple licensed DD encoders for QT, they could then transcode sound into DD for SPDIF output. This is where QuickTime uses our system sound capabilities for sound output and why most of us get stereo without additional hardware. In the case of Apple’s movie trailers, they are encoded in 5.1 AAC. Unfortunately, not all surround sound is AC3. That said, it is a still big step forward and it is definitely better than silence. ts files in Front Row with Apple’s MPEG2 component or Divx files with AC3. But until it outputs more than stereo, it is only a partial fix for playing. (Insert conspiracy theory here if desired.) This is where the AC3 plugin is a big step forward since it addresses the recognition issue. It does not recognize AC3 sound AND it does not pass it through the SPDIF jack. They just pass the signal unchanged to the receiver. This is how DVD player and some other apps (most notably VLC) do surround. To my knowledge, SPDIF only allows for DD, DTS and stereo PCM transmission. Let me know if I have something wrong.įirst, we are limited by the SPDIF optical jack. I think there are a few issues going on here. I'll try that if anyone thinks it will help, but it's hard for me to see why it would. When I called Applecare, their only suggestion was to reinstall the OS. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to get 5.1 surround working on the System Sound Output, since I bought this Mini just to use as a Media Center. I've flashed the PRAM and NVRAM but there was no effect. It says the "Selected device has no output controls". In System Preferences: Sound: Output, I've selected Internal Speakers which uses Built-in Output as the port. When I then select Multichannel, I can only select Stereo from the drop down menu at the top right, as "5.1 Surround" (and every other option, such as 7.1 surround) is greyed out.Ĭan anyone please suggest why 5.1 surround is greyed out? I select Properties For Built-in Output and then Configure Speakers. In Audio MIDI Setup (under Utilities), I can only select Stereo, not 5.1. This is bad because Quicktime uses System Sound Output, so I'm not getting surround on any downloaded videos. (I'm using the Avia DVD to test the 5.1.) But when I set it to System Sound Output, I only get stereo output. I know it's a software problem because when I set the DVD Player to use "Digital Out - Built-in Output" (under Preferences: Disc Setup: Audio output), I correctly get 5.1 surround. I can't seem to set the System Sound Output or the Audio MIDI Setup to support 5.1 surround. I have an Intel Mac Mini running 10.4.6 connected via an optical Toslink cable to a Marantz receiver and then 5.1 surround speakers. I can't get the System Sound Output to do 5.1 I can only get 5.1 surround working when I set DVD Player to use Digital Out.
